Anthony elected as Chair Standing orders Committee for 4th World Congress

The National Secretary of the Fiji Trades Union Congress- FTUC, Mr. Felix Anthony and the President of the International Trades Union Congress Asia Pacific- ITUC AP   was unanimously elected as the Chair of the Standing Orders Committee of the 4th ITUC World Congress.

The International Trade Union Confederation – ITUC is the global voice of the world’s working people.  ITUC represents 207,796.315 members in 331 affiliated organizations in 163 countries and territories.  The regional organizations of the ITUC are the Asia-Pacific Regional Organization (ITUC-AP), the African Regional Organization (ITUC-AF) and the American Regional Organization (TUCA). In Europe, the ITUC cooperates closely with the European Trade Union Confederation.

The ITUC’s primary mission is the promotion and defense of workers’ rights and interests, through international cooperation between trade unions, global campaigning and advocacy within the major global institutions.  Its main areas of activity include the following: trade union and human rights; economy, society and the workplace; equality and non-discrimination; and international solidarity.

The ITUC adheres to the principles of trade union democracy and independence. It is governed by four-yearly world congresses, a General Council and an Executive Bureau.

The ITUC regional organizations are the Asia-Pacific Regional Organization (ITUC-AP), the African Regional Organization (ITUC-AF) and the American Regional Organization (TUCA). It cooperates with the European Trade Union Confederation, including through the Pan-European Regional Council. The ITUC has close relations with the Global Union Federations and the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC). It works closely with the International Labour Organization and with several other UN Specialized Agencies.

Mr Anthony presented the Standing Orders for the Committee on, Monday 03rd December to more than 1200 world leaders of the trade union movement.   The 4th ITUC World Congress is being held at Copenhagen, Denmark from the 02nd December till 07th December.  The Standing Orders Committee approves and enforces the rules of the Conference that the Elections and voting procedures, speaking Rules, Motions, Resolutions and Amendments for the Constitution amongst other critical roles of the World Congress. The SOC meets daily prior to the main Congress proceedings and presents its Report.

This historical achievement at the 4th ITUC World Congress is a huge milestone for workers of the Asia Pacific region and specifically Fiji and the FTUC. Mr. Anthony’s many distinguished achievements in the struggle for workers’ rights in Fiji and the Asia Pacific also includes his membership of the ILO Governing Body, the ACEP EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and the ITUC AP presidency, Regional Executive Board and Regional General Council.
